Just days after his Manchester United exit, Ruben Amorim is already being linked with a rapid return to management, with reports naming him the frontrunner for the head coach role at Benfica.
The Portuguese manager was dismissed earlier this week, ending a turbulent 14-month spell at Old Trafford that saw him become one of the club’s least successful managers in the Premier League era.
His departure reportedly followed a breakdown in relations with the club hierarchy, especially after he openly criticised the board.
Tensions are said to have reached a peak after a meeting with director of football James Wilcox, during which Amorim refused to adjust his tactical approach despite a string of poor results.
Amorim’s record at Manchester United was deeply underwhelming, with a win percentage far lower than any other permanent manager in the club’s Premier League history.
While he did lead the team to a Europa League final last season, persistent inconsistency and a historically low league finish in his first full campaign sealed his fate.
In the meantime, Manchester United have appointed Darren Fletcher as interim manager and are reportedly considering former bosses Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Michael Carrick to see out the season.
Meanwhile, Amorim could be preparing to return to his native Portugal, where Benfica are also struggling.
The current Benfica manager, another former United coach, José Mourinho, faces mounting pressure as the team trails league leaders Porto by 10 points and sits 25th in the Champions League group stage standings.
