Former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) commissioner Eng. Mohamed Abdullahi Sharawe is dead.
His death was confirmed on Monday by Eldas MP Adan Keynan, who said the former electoral commissioner passed away on Sunday night. The cause of his death was not immediately disclosed.
In his condolence message, Keynan described Sharawe as a respected statesman, engineer and public servant who dedicated his life to serving the country.
“His life was defined by integrity, humility and unwavering commitment to public service,” Keynan said.
Sharawe served as one of the first commissioners of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission after the 2010 Constitution came into force. During his tenure between 2011 and 2016, the commission oversaw the 2013 General Election and carried out voter registration and electoral boundary review.
Before joining the electoral body, he built a long career in government as a civil engineer and senior administrator. He served as Permanent Secretary in the Ministries of Roads and Public Works, and later Research, Technical Training and Applied Technology under the administrations of former Presidents Daniel arap Moi and Mwai Kibaki.
In 2009, President Kibaki appointed him to chair the Special Presidential Committee on Muslim Concerns, where he led efforts to address issues affecting the Muslim community.
Leaders who mourned him said Kenya had lost a dedicated public servant whose contribution to governance and public administration will be remembered for years.
