Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has dismissed calls for President William Ruto to serve only one term, arguing that Kenya’s Constitution was designed to allow presidents enough time to implement and complete their development agenda.
Kindiki urged Kenyans to continue supporting President Ruto as he moves towards the end of his first term and prepares for the next phase of his administration during a church resource mobilisation drive for 19 congregations in Ziwa, Soy Constituency, Uasin Gishu County on Sunday.
The Deputy President took issue with the “Wantam” slogan that has increasingly been used by critics of the Kenya Kwanza administration, saying there is no constitutional basis for limiting a president to a single term.
“Hakuna kitu kama one term kwa katiba. Yule mtu anasema one term hajasoma katiba,” Kindiki said.
He argued that the first term of any presidency is largely spent formulating policies, introducing reforms and rolling out flagship projects, while the second term provides an opportunity to complete those programmes and deliver their full benefits to citizens.
“Term ya kwanza ni ya kuleta programs, kuleta policies, kuleta marekebisho na kuleta ile miradi ambayo inaambatana na ruwaza ya huyo kiongozi. Term ya pili ni ya kukamilisha,” he added.
Kindiki’s remarks come as political temperatures continue to rise ahead of the 2027 General Election, with allies of President Ruto increasingly defending his development record while opposition leaders push the one-term narrative.
During the church event, the Deputy President also highlighted ongoing government programmes in agriculture, education, health, affordable housing and infrastructure development, saying the projects were already transforming lives in Uasin Gishu and across the country.
His latest comments are likely to further fuel the growing political contest between the Kenya Kwanza camp and its critics as the battle for 2027 begins to take shape.
