Drug trafficking in Kenya faces a new challenge after the Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI) boosted its operations against narcotics by graduating a new batch of detectives who had undergone training in anti-narcotics investigations.
Cohort III of the Basic Anti-Narcotics Investigations Course graduated from the National Criminal Investigations Academy (NCIA) after completing a one-month programme designed to sharpen their ability to tackle increasingly sophisticated drug networks.
Throughout the training, detectives equipped with skills in intelligence-led investigations, evidence management, operational planning and inter-agency cooperation.
On completion, the officers were dispatched to the DCI Anti-Narcotics Department, where they’ll be used as a resource in operations meant to stop the movement of drugs.
Mohammed I. Amin, the Director of Criminal investigations, said through Francis Ndiema, the Director of Investigation Bureau that drug smugglers use technology and trade chains across the world to become big multinational companies.
“Success is not measured merely by the number of arrests made or narcotics seized. It is measured by the quality of investigations, successful prosecutions, and the permanent dismantling of criminal networks,” said Mr. Amin.
He urged the graduands to be led by integrity, professionalism, sound judgment, and resilience in their new assignment, and to work closely with forensic experts, prosecutors, and regional and international law enforcement partners.
Commandant NCIA Mr. Ibrahim Jillo reaffirmed the Academy’s commitment to producing investigators grounded in discipline and the rule of law.
“The perpetrators of drug trafficking should know no peace once you leave this academy,” said Mr. Jillo.
Director of the DCI Anti-Narcotics Unit Mr. Samuel Laboso urged the newly trained detectives to pay attention to dismantling criminal networks in whole while drug seizures and arrests alone shouldn’t be the only measures of achievement measures of achievement.
Through this training session, DCI has raised Kenya’s potential of countering international drug crimes and deepened collaboration between local and foreign law enforcement institutions.
