The government will roll out a comprehensive empowerment program in Kerio Valley to rehabilitate youths who have abandoned banditry and surrendered their firearms, Interior and National Administration Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has revealed.

While at the funeral of Mama Pauline Kipkore, mother of Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi, in Cherangany, Trans Nzoia County, Murkomen said the move will allow re-educated youth to enroll in vocational training institutions and start their own viable businesses.

The minister said youth led by the call for disarmament in Elgeyo Marakwet have done well and conveyed the message to Tiaty, Baringo County, and West Pokot residents to follow their example.

Moreover, Murkomen said the government money of KSh 1 billion has been allocated to open up roads in the Kerio Valley area so as to facilitate security and ease the movement of the residents.

The minister noted that the government’s measures in Kerio Valley were aimed at, first of all, quelling unrest and then sustaining development in the area, thus, ensuring that people benefited from the wider govt strategy.
