Centum Investment Company Chief Executive Officer James Mworia Mwirigi has landed a key government appointment after Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi named him to the board of the National Infrastructure Fund (NIF).

Mworia is among six members appointed through a special Kenya Gazette notice dated July 8 to serve a three-year term as the government moves to operationalise the newly established fund.

The National Infrastructure Fund was created to mobilise financing for major infrastructure projects while reducing reliance on public debt. It is expected to support investments in roads, energy, housing, water and other strategic projects.

Mworia is one of Kenya’s longest-serving corporate executives, having led Centum since 2008. Under his leadership, the investment firm has expanded its footprint across real estate, financial services, healthcare, manufacturing and private equity.

His appointment comes barely weeks after Parliament passed the National Infrastructure Fund Act, paving the way for the establishment of the board that will oversee the fund’s operations.

Treasury CS John Mbadi said the appointments were made under Section 13(1) of the National Infrastructure Fund Act, 2026, with the six members taking office immediately for a three-year term.

Besides Mworia, Mbadi appointed Fahima Ali Ahmed Zein, Christopher Kibui Maranga, Latoya Ouna, Lawrence Kibet and Mohammed Abdirahman Hassan to the board.

The appointments mark a major milestone in putting the fund into operation after President William Ruto signed the law establishing the financing vehicle.

The government hopes the fund will attract both local and international investors to finance large infrastructure projects without piling more pressure on the country’s debt burden.

The appointments also come just a day after President Ruto signed the Sovereign Wealth Fund Bill, another key piece of legislation aimed at strengthening Kenya’s long-term public investment strategy.
