Francis Odee

The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) and the National Police Service’s Internal Affairs Unit have launched investigations into the arrest of Citizen TV’s Francis Odee in Nairobi.

In a statement, the National Police Service (NPS) said the Internal Affairs Unit began its investigations after receiving a report on the incident.

The unit is seeking to establish what happened and the circumstances surrounding Francis Odee’s arrest before determining the appropriate action under the law.

IPOA has also opened its own investigations, with the police saying they will cooperate with the authority and provide the support needed to facilitate the process.

The NPS said the investigations were intended to establish the facts and ensure the matter is handled transparently and accountably.

The service also reaffirmed its commitment to working with the media, saying journalists play an important role in promoting public confidence in policing and supporting democracy.

It added that it would continue providing the necessary support to journalists as they carry out their duties.

The police have appealed to members of the public and the media to remain calm as the investigations proceed.

Anyone with information that could assist investigators has been urged to report to the nearest police station or use the emergency numbers 999 and 911.

The public can also share information through the Directorate of Criminal Investigations’ toll-free Fichua Kwa DCI hotline on 0800 722 203 or WhatsApp on 0709 570 000.

The NPS said it remained committed to professionalism, discipline, transparency and accountability, as well as respecting constitutional standards on human rights and fundamental freedoms.
