The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has arrested two traffic police officers over allegations of extorting money from motorists along the Maua–Makutano Road in Meru County.
The officers, identified as Senior Sergeant Robert Kibet Busienei and Police Constable Janet Rose Makena, were taken into custody on Friday after a focused surveillance operation conducted near Kemu.
The two officers are accused by the commission of demanding and accepting bribes from the motorists driving on the busy road.
During the raid, the EACC officers recovered KSh 23, 000 comprising of different denominations on the suspects. They also seized a Toyota Fielder (Reg. No. KDC 873T) which was parked alongside the road.
The suspects were taken to EACC Upper Eastern Regional Office in Isiolo for processing and recording of statements.
The apprehension is part of the commission’s fight against bribery and corruption by public officers.
The commission has called on public officers to behave ethically as they perform their functions, as measures to fight bribery and shield members of the public from extortion are still ongoing.
The two officers continue to be suspects of the suspected offences, and the charges haven’t yet been proved in court.
