Police in Garissa have arrested a suspected M-Pesa fraudster accused of targeting shop attendants in Garissa town and surrounding areas.
The suspect, identified as Edwin Mugoi, was arrested by officers from Garissa Police Station shortly after allegedly defrauding an M-Pesa attendant in the Posta area of Bulla Hodhan.
According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), Mugoi approached the attendant while posing as a Safaricom agent and claimed he was offering a line upgrade.
Police said the suspect used the opportunity to swap the attendantβs phone line before allegedly transferring money from the M-Pesa account to another account.
The attendant reported the incident to police, prompting officers to launch an operation that led to Mugoiβs arrest shortly afterwards.
During a search, officers recovered several items believed to have been used in the alleged fraud, including multiple SIM cards, four mobile phones, two SIM card registration gadgets and four mobile phone chargers.
The DCI said the suspect had allegedly been swindling M-Pesa shop attendants in Garissa town and neighbouring areas using similar tactics.
Mugoi remains in police custody as officers process the case ahead of his arraignment in court.
Investigations are ongoing as police seek to establish whether the suspect was linked to other reported M-Pesa fraud cases in the area.
