Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) has confirmed the death of all five quintuplets who were transferred to the facility from Thika Level Five Hospital for specialised care.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, September 16, KNH said the babies were born at an extremely premature gestational age of 25 weeks and had critically low birth weights.
The hospital said the babies faced significant clinical challenges from the time they were admitted and were placed under the care of a specialised neonatal team.
The team included neonatologists, nurses and other health professionals who made every effort to support the babies.
“Despite the dedicated efforts of our medical teams and the specialized care provided, all five newborns sadly passed away,” KNH said.
The quintuplets had been born at Thika Level Five Hospital before being referred to KNH for specialised tertiary care.
KNH did not give a specific cause of death but said the babies’ extreme prematurity and critically low birth weights presented significant medical challenges.
The hospital expressed its condolences to the mother and the entire family following the loss.
“KNH is deeply saddened by this devastating loss and extends its most sincere and heartfelt condolences to the mother and the entire family,” the hospital said.
The statement was signed by Dr Joel Lessan, the Acting Chief Executive Officer of Kenyatta National Hospital.
