Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition Party leader Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka has welcomed former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s decision to relinquish leadership of the Jubilee Party following a High Court ruling.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, Kalonzo said Kenyatta’s willingness to comply with the court decision demonstrated statesmanship and respect for the judiciary.
Kalonzo noted that the succession of leadership within Jubilee Party should be handled by the party’s own organs in an orderly and lawful manner.
He, however, clarified that the High Court ruling only restricts a retired President from holding formal party leadership positions beyond six months after leaving office.
“We welcome this new chapter,” Kalonzo said.
According to Kalonzo, the judgment does not prevent Kenyatta from joining a political party, remaining a member or participating in its activities.
The Azimio leader further stated that Kenyatta remains a valued member of the coalition, saying the court had preserved his constitutional rights to political participation.
On the leadership of the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition Council, Kalonzo said the matter would be handled in accordance with the law, the coalition’s constitution, the Political Parties Act and the Deed of Agreement.
He said a joint session of the Council and the National Executive Committee would be convened to consider the court judgment and make the necessary changes.
Kalonzo also announced that Azimio is embarking on a comprehensive rebranding ahead of the 2027 General Election, including renewing its structures, policy platform and public engagement.
