ODM leader Oburu Oginga has travelled to the United Kingdom for a routine medical check-up, the party has confirmed.
ODM Communications Director Philip Etale on Thursday said Oburu’s trip came after a brief visit to a Nairobi hospital and was not linked to any reported serious illness.
Etale’s clarification comes amid growing public interest in the health of the veteran politician after reports that he had been admitted to hospital.
Oburu had earlier dismissed reports of a readmission, saying he had only made a brief hospital visit for a general check-up.
“There is no cause for alarm,” Oburu said after the reports emerged. He said he was recovering well at his Nairobi home.
The latest update means the ODM leader is currently in the UK for a routine medical review.
The development is likely to draw attention given Oburu’s position as ODM leader and his role in Kenya’s political landscape.
Oburu, 82, took over the leadership of ODM following the death of his younger brother and longtime party leader Raila Odinga in 2025. He was subsequently confirmed as the party’s leader in March 2026.
The Siaya Senator has remained active in ODM politics as the party positions itself ahead of the 2027 General Election.
ODM has not indicated that Oburu is undergoing treatment for any serious condition, with the latest communication describing the UK visit as a routine medical check-up.
The party is expected to continue its political activities as Oburu attends to the medical review.
