The Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) has officially changed its status from a state corporation to a public limited company as part of ongoing government reforms targeting state-owned enterprises.
KAA Chief Executive Officer Moses Wekesa announced the change on Thursday, saying the authority was incorporated as Kenya Airports Authority PLC on June 3, 2026.
“The organisation has officially transitioned from Kenya Airports Authority to Kenya Airports Authority PLC, incorporated as a public limited company on 3rd June, 2026, under the Companies Act, 2015,” Wekesa said.
The company was issued Certificate No. PLC-P6U58MWD following its incorporation.
KAA stated that the move is one of the measures being implemented to help improve governance, accountability, and financial and operational performance of government-owned companies.
This will happen after the repeal of the Kenya Airports Authority Act in December 5, 2025 under the Government-Owned Enterprises Act of 2025.
In the new setup, KAA will be regulated by the Companies Act and the new legislation for government-owned companies.
The changes come at a time when KAA is facing financial and investment pressures.
The authority’s net profit dropped by 41 per cent to KSh3.8 billion in the financial year ended June 2025, down from KSh6.5 billion recorded the previous year.
KAA also reported lower revenue during the period, alongside an increase in operating costs.
The authority has been dealing with other financial pressures, including debts owed by local airlines and liabilities linked to the cancelled Greenfield Terminal project at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.
KAA is also expected to raise significant funds for major airport projects, including the planned KSh154.2 billion upgrade of JKIA.
The project includes the construction of a new passenger terminal, additional boarding bridges and a new runway.
Wekesa said the new corporate structure would help KAA strengthen partnerships and support the growth of Kenya’s aviation industry.
He added that the authority would continue focusing on safe, secure, efficient and sustainable airport operations as it takes on the new structure.
