Three people narrowly escaped death on Monday morning after a Kenya Railways train engine rammed into a canter truck at the Limuru railway crossing near Bata Shoes Company in Kiambu County.

The incident occurred at around 8:30 a.m., leaving the truck and the train engine damaged. However, all the occupants of the canter survived the crash without serious injuries in what witnesses described as a miraculous escape.

Preliminary reports indicate that the collision happened under foggy weather conditions that significantly reduced visibility at the busy railway crossing.

Questions have since emerged over whether all safety protocols were observed before the train approached the crossing.

Authorities are expected to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash to establish what exactly happened and whether any traffic or railway regulations were breached.

Despite the impact, no fatalities or serious injuries were reported, with the damage limited to the locomotive and the canter truck.

The latest incident has once again thrown the spotlight on safety at railway crossings, especially during periods of poor visibility when motorists and train operators are required to exercise extra caution.

Road safety experts have repeatedly urged motorists to slow down, stop where necessary, look both ways and listen for approaching trains before crossing railway lines. They have also called on train operators to strictly observe signalling and warning procedures, particularly during adverse weather conditions.

As investigations get underway, motorists have been advised to remain vigilant at all railway crossings and avoid attempting to beat oncoming trains, saying a few seconds of patience could be the difference between life and death.
