Kenya Railways has resumed freight services on the Gilgil-Nyahururu line after nearly 46 years of dormancy. The restored line, which was inactive, has already attracted interest from majority industry players.
The opening of the line began with 11 Metre Gauge Railway wagons, as it was the first cargo train to operate on the corridor since its closure, reviving an economic growth, regional development and improved connectivity.
The Gilgil-Nyahururu corridor will support farmers and traders in agricultural produce, timber and livestock as it will reconnect farming communities to national and regional markets. It has also attracted major industries such as Bamburi Cement PLC, OCP Kenya Ltd, New Kenya Cooperative Creameries (New KCC) and Auto Ports Terminals Ltd.
The rail will provide passenger services, allowing it to be used as a transport commodity, boosting tourism, improving access to markets and social services. The revival aligns with Kenya’s broader vision of leveraging rail transport to support the agenda of Kenya’s Vision 2030.
Local leaders have welcomed the development, noting it will create jobs, boost agribusiness and attract new investments restoring the town’s historic role as transport hub.
