A public inquest into the Nyeri County Hillside Endarasha Academy dormitory fire, which killed 21 students on 5 September 2024 has revealed that one of the school five CCTV cameras had been compromised.
CCTV expert, James Githinji informed Senior Resident Magistrate, Miss Mary Gituma had put in the surveillance cameras only five days before the mid morning blaze, and left them all working.
Githinji stated that he installed the cameras and when he finished and left the school yard on 30 th August 2024 all the five cameras and the DVR were working. However, the CCTV was down when the fire started, another camera was not working.
He said that the first responders advised him that the CCTV camera could have been overshadowed by the fire engine on its way to the fire.
An inquest set to resume on Monday will try to determine what caused the deadly dormitory fire that rocked the country.
The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions has on the other hand requested the court to issued summons to the former Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Director General Daniel Bargoria to testify in the matter.The hearing continues on Tuesday, April 28, 2026.
