Electric

The government is planning a major switch to electric transport, after the National Treasury invited bids to lease hundreds of electric and hybrid vehicles for use in public offices.

In the new plan, at least 600 vehicles will be leased under the government’s motor vehicle programme. The cars will be used by agencies such as the National Police Service, Kenya Prisons Service and other government departments.

According to the tender notice, different suppliers including manufacturers, dealers and leasing firms have been invited to apply through an open process.

The fleet will include a mix of vehicles, from electric 4x4s and pickups to smaller hybrid units that can be used both on and off the road.

Moreover, the Treasury has released another tender to lease 70 fast charging stations that will aid in supporting the implementation of the vehicles.

The initiative will be done through a leasing plan whereby the government will not be buying the vehicles but will instead lease them from private firms that will manage and maintain them.

It all falls under the efforts by Kenya to make the transportation sector cleaner.

In the year, the Ministry of Transport had also made it mandatory to use green number plates for electric vehicles as a way of reducing carbon emissions in the air.

The trend also shows an increase in the use of electricity by electric vehicles in Kenya according to the latest data from Kenya Power.

Electricity usage in the year 2025 went above 8.4 million kilowatts compared to 2.9 million the previous year. As such, there was increased revenue due to the high number of users of EV.

It will go ahead to become one of the largest measures taken by the government towards cleaner mobility as the country continues to invest in e-mobility.
