Turning on the electricity has become a sign of progress in Western Kenya. President William Rutos initiative to expand the supply of electricity in rural areas is changing the lives of the people and helping micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) to grow.
The Energy Act 2019 set the framework, and the Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Corporation (REREC) has ramped up efforts to provide electricity in the areas that have traditionally been left out.
In response to the new investment of KSh 2. 374 billion in Kakamega County, more than 36,700 customers are expected to be connected to the electricity grid, thereby facilitating new economic ventures in the region.
However, apart from just illuminating households, the electrification scheme is a key driver of youth entrepreneurship. Stores, hair salons, and other small venues are opening almost daily, benefiting massively from the availability of stable power supply.
The youth in Kinyozi are creatively leveraging the opportunity to eke out sustainable revenus by running their businesses in retail outlets. While President Ruto was at one of the electrified barbershops, a young man mentioned that the access to electricity has not only enhanced his income but also expanded his business. Close to the area, a KSh 13. 4 million infrastructural upgrade involving over seven kilometres of low-voltage lines demonstrated that electricity was a key factor changing peoples life.
Part of the electrification project is the overall development plan of Khwisero where REREC has injected KSh 198. 11 million in 18 projects including schools and market centres.
Moreover, a Matching Fund programmebacked by KSh 135 million from the county and constituencies has boosted community involvement.
Since electricity availability was at 4% in 2008 and it has increased to more than 75% now, rural transformation is happening gradually and through this, youth employment and MSME development are areas to look forward to.
