The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has issued a traffic advisory following flooding at the Kipsonoi River Bridge in Mugeni, disrupting movement along the busy Kaplong–Kisii (B6) Road.
In a statement released on Saturday, March 21, 2026, the authority said the bridge, situated between Sotik and Chebilat, has been rendered unsafe for motorable traffic after water levels rose significantly due to heavy rainfall in upstream catchment areas.
“The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) wishes to notify the public that the Kipsonoi River Bridge at Mugeni… has experienced flooding, rendering the section unsafe for motorable traffic,” the statement said.
KeNHA cautioned motorists against attempting to cross the flooded section and urged them to strictly follow directions issued by police officers and traffic marshals stationed at the scene.
“The situation has been occasioned by heavy rainfall in the upstream catchment areas, resulting in a significant rise in water levels,” the authority added, warning drivers to avoid flooded roads to ensure their safety.
To ease movement, KeNHA announced alternative routes for affected motorists. Those heading toward Chebilat and Keroka have been advised to use the Kaplong–Sotik–Roret–Ikonge–Chebilat–Keroka route, while travellers bound for Kisii should follow the Kaplong–Sotik–Roret–Ikonge–Kisii route.
According to the authority, the diversion routes are paved and capable of handling traffic as efforts continue to address the situation at the affected bridge.
The disruption comes amid ongoing heavy rains being experienced in several parts of the country, leading to rising river levels and increased risk of road interruptions.
The Kaplong–Kisii highway serves as a key transport corridor linking Kericho and Kisii counties, and the temporary closure is expected to affect both motorists and businesses relying on the route.
KeNHA Director General Luka Kimeli said the authority is closely monitoring the situation and will take further action depending on changes in water levels.
He assured road users that measures are being put in place to restore normal traffic flow as soon as it is safe, while calling for cooperation from the public to help prevent accidents.
“KeNHA is closely monitoring the situation and will take appropriate action should water levels continue to rise… The Authority appreciates your cooperation as we work to ensure the safety of all road users,” the statement read.
