Proposal to Name TUK After Raila Odinga Gains Momentum

Tanzania’s CHADEMA deputy chairman, John Wegesa Heche, has been arrested.

Heche was arrested on Saturday, October 18, at the Tanzania-Kenya border while attempting to enter Kenya, where he was scheduled to attend former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s burial.

According to CHADEMA’s director of communications Brenda Rupia, the Tanzania Immigration Authority, which took him in after the arrest, took his travel documents without any explanation for the decision.

"We condemn Heche's detention and call on the authorities to show compassion for Kenyans. We demand that the Government of Tanzania immediately release Heche and stop harassing our party leaders, stop violating their right to move freely in and out of the country, something guaranteed under Article 17(1) of the Constitution of the United Republic of Tanzania," said Brenda.
