Ruaka Town’s inhabitants from Kiambu County say that a six-storey house being built in the region is threatening their lives. However, cracks on its framework have been observed.

The residents, represented by ex Senior Chief George Munyua, state that apart from the danger of the development polluting the area, the project has crossed their land, destroying the crops and perimeter walls of the neighboring plots.

Moreover, the residents complain that despite their grievances being presented to officials of Kiambu County Government, National Construction Authority (NCA), National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA), and the police, the authorities have neither taken steps nor responded.

“We are not safe and our source of income is under threat. The building is still being constructed but fissures are visible. We have been destroyed, and still, no one cares,” said Munyua.

The community members want the officials to come and stop the construction work without any further delay. They even go further to warn that if the issue is not taken seriously it could lead to a disaster the same as the collapses of buildings that have occurred in other regions of the country.

Kiambu County has been home to several cases of unsafe buildings over the past few years. The regulators are often criticized for slack enforcement of construction standards.
