KCB RFC have carved their name deeper into Kenyan rugby folklore after clinching the 2025 National 7s Circuit title, becoming the most successful team in the tournament’s 26-year history.
The bankers sealed the crown in dramatic fashion, edging Strathmore Leos 15–14 in a thrilling Dala 7s Cup quarterfinal at the Jomo Kenyatta International Stadium in Mamboleo, Kisumu.
The win not only booked KCB a semifinal spot but also guaranteed them at least 119 points in the overall standings, enough to mathematically lock out all challengers, including Strathmore.
This triumph sees KCB surpass traditional powerhouses Kenya Harlequin, Impala RFC, and Mwamba RFC, each of whom has won the national circuit four times. The 2025 title adds to KCB’s previous championships in 2013, 2014, 2019, and 2023.
Sunday’s clash served as a sweet dose of revenge. Strathmore had handed KCB their only two losses this season—24–7 at the Prinsloo 7s and 31–21 at the Embu 7s.
But in Kisumu, the bankers, who had already claimed the Christies, Kabeberi, and Driftwood legs, rose to the occasion with grit and composure.
The quarterfinal itself was a classic. KCB drew first blood through star winger Vincent Onyala, though his try went unconverted. Strathmore hit back with a converted effort from scrum-half Brian Mwendwa to lead 7–5 at the break.
In the second half, former Leos standout George Ooro powered KCB ahead 10–7, only for Strathmore’s Samuel Wafula to respond with a converted try that made it 14–10. With the clock ticking down, Ooro struck again—this time against his former club—securing a dramatic 15–14 victory.
With this latest success, KCB now stand alone as the most decorated club in the National 7s Circuit, surpassing eras dominated by Impala, Homeboyz, Kabras Sugar, and Menengai Oilers. Their dominance this season, coupled with their ability to deliver under pressure, has set a new standard in Kenyan rugby sevens.
The 2025 Dala 7s continues Sunday evening, with KCB set to face Daystar Falcons in the semifinals. But regardless of the outcome, the season title is already theirs.
