Six years now have gone by since the tragic demise of John De’Mathew, the legendary Kikuyu Benga artist whose music continues to reign in Kenyans’ hearts. The late De’Mathew’s blunt songs and input to Kenyan heritage can never be covered by another artist. His tragic death in a car accident on 18th August 2019 left an empty space that was never occupied.

This week, his second wife, Carolyne Waithera, exposed her soul in a heart-wrenching Facebook post as she marked the tragic anniversary of his passing. She also visited his resting place together with her sons and placed a boquet of flowers on his grave. Writing in her brief eulogy, she said:

“6 yrs ago today, Continue resting in peace ❤️ My heart is ????.”

17th August, Sarafina Dematthew, first wife and other music moguls had a music show to celebrate his 6th anniversary.
the music show was at OJ Kenol along Murangá road

The heartfelt message and show touched fans who remember De’Mathew not only as a music icon but also as a family man.

The death of De’Mathew was a great shock to the entertainment industry. His accident took away one of Kenya’s finest artists, whose music always had deep messages about society, love, and everyday struggles. To this day, his music remains timeless pieces that are being played across central Kenya and even beyond.
