Three people were killed and eight others injured in a tragic road accident early Sunday morning at Chuma area, about three kilometers south of Kinangop Police Station. The incident occurred when a speeding Isuzu D-Max pickup crashed into a police-led rescue operation at the scene of an earlier motorcycle accident, striking both officers and civilians.
According to a police report filed under OB No. 02/15/06/2025, the incident occurred at around 1:20am as officers from Kinangop Police Station and the Traffic Department were responding to an earlier crash involving two motorcycles.
During the rescue and recovery efforts by police officers and members of the public, a silver Isuzu D-Max double cabin pickup, registration number KBT 522N, traveling at high speed from Engineer towards Njabini, rammed into a stationary police vehicle (GKB 679T) and a parked lorry.
The impact fatally injured several individuals at the scene, including two police officers and the driver of the pickup. The deceased were identified as Sergeant Dickson Kilonzo, Police Constable Gilbert Makori, and Ben Wakivi, the driver of the Isuzu D-Max.
Eight others sustained varying degrees of injuries and were rushed to North Kinangop Mission Hospital. Among the injured is Assistant Inspector General Edwin Mungai Kamau from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations Headquarters, who suffered a fractured left leg.
Also injured were Cpl/Driver Hesbon Mwangi (head injuries), Cpl Abdi Hassan (chest pains), and Cpl Boniface Libuthi (injured right leg). Civilians injured include Lucy Nyambura Wanjiku, 20, with a left leg injury; Peter Macharia Karanja, 47, with general body pain; Daniel Kibebo Wainoga, 28, with a left leg injury; and Dominic Waweru, 30, who suffered a fractured left leg.
The bodies of the deceased were moved to the Engineer Sub-County Hospital Mortuary for preservation and postmortem examinations.
Nyandarua County Commissioner Abdirisack Jaldesa described the tragedy as “a dark morning for the county,” vowing a thorough investigation. “This is a heartbreaking event that has cost us the lives of dedicated officers and endangered civilians. We are working closely with investigators to determine the circumstances and ensure accountability,” he said.
County Police Commander Stella Cherono confirmed that senior officers, including crime scene experts, have documented the scene, and that investigations led by the Kinangop Traffic Base Commander are ongoing. Further updates are expected in due course.
