Marcus Rashford has officially completed his long-anticipated loan move from Manchester United to Aston Villa after both clubs reached an agreement.
Villa will cover 70% of Rashford’s wages during his time at the club, and the deal includes an option for a permanent transfer, with a potential three-and-a-half-year contract to follow.
Fabrizio Romano, the well-known Italian sports journalist, confirmed the news, saying: “Marcus Rashford to Aston Villa, here we go! Agreement in place for a loan deal with over 70% of his salary covered by Villa. There’s also a £40m buy option clause included, along with a possible three-and-a-half-year contract.”
The deal had initially been seen as a costly one for Villa, due to Rashford’s high salary, but the move has now been finalized.
Villa manager Unai Emery played a key role in making the transfer happen, giving the green light for the club to pursue the England international.
Emery and Rashford reportedly held talks about the club’s project and the potential of playing in the Champions League.
Speculation about Rashford’s future had been growing for several weeks, especially after he was left out of Manchester United’s 21-man squad for their recent Europa League win against FCSB.
He had last featured for United in a Europa League match against Viktoria Plzen and had made it clear in December that he was “ready for a new challenge.” However, his wages had limited the number of potential suitors.
Reports also emerged suggesting a strained relationship between Rashford and United’s manager, Ruben Amorim, with some suggesting that Rashford was no longer on speaking terms with the coach.
Despite this, Amorim left the door open for Rashford to earn his place back in the first team, stating that United are “a better team with Rashford” but that he “has to change” before he can regain a spot in the starting lineup.
With the loan move to Villa now complete, Rashford will look to reignite his career at his new club, with the possibility of a permanent switch looming.
