Two people have died after a small aircraft crashed during a training exercise in Kipeto, Kajiado County, on Friday, September 18.
The aircraft had a student and a teacher on board when it went down near a wind power plant in the area.
Kajiado West Police Commander Maureen Kuto confirmed the incident, saying the student died at the scene while the teacher succumbed to injuries while being taken to Kajiado Referral Hospital.
“When we received a phone call, we were alerted that an aircraft had been involved in an accident and had two people on board, a student and a teacher. The first victim succumbed at the scene while the second succumbed while being rushed to hospital,” Kuto said.
Kuto said preliminary reports pointed to poor visibility caused by heavy morning mist as a possible factor in the crash.
“The preliminary cause of the aircraft accident is poor visibility that was occasioned by poor visibility in the morning as a result of the mist,” she said.
According to the police commander, the occupants attempted to make a crash landing after encountering the poor visibility, but the aircraft eventually crashed.
“However, there was much fog during the morning hours, so they attempted to make an emergency landing, but unfortunately the aircraft crashed,” Kuto stated.
Photographs from the crash site revealed the wreckage spread out on an empty and barren piece of land.
Emergency personnel and security guards were witnessed at the crash site as they assessed the wreckage and secured the area.
The wreckage included portions of the aircraft, such as sections of its metal covering and belongings of the individuals onboard.
The authorities were investigating the situation while analyzing the crash site.”
