A Turkish national suspected of having Ebola caused a scare at a Nairobi hospital after reportedly refusing to be quarantined while awaiting test results.
The foreign national walked into AAR Hospital along Kiambu Road at around 11pm on Sunday seeking treatment after falling ill.
Medical personnel who attended to him are said to have identified symptoms consistent with Ebola, prompting an immediate public health response.
However, the situation took a dramatic turn when the patient allegedly became uncooperative and demanded to be released before laboratory tests could confirm whether he was infected with the deadly virus.
The incident prompted hospital officials to alert Nairobi County and Sub-County Public Health officers, who moved in to take charge of the matter.
Due to the patient’s refusal to remain under observation and the sensitive nature of the case, officers at Muthaiga Police Station were also notified.
Samples were subsequently collected and forwarded to the National Public Health Laboratory for urgent analysis to establish whether the patient had contracted Ebola or another disease presenting similar symptoms.
The development comes at a time when Kenya has heightened surveillance against Ebola following outbreaks reported in parts of East and Central Africa.
Health authorities have repeatedly maintained that the country remains on high alert due to its position as a major transport and trade hub connecting the region.
The suspected case is likely to raise fresh concerns about Kenya’s preparedness to handle a possible Ebola outbreak, especially amid ongoing debate over quarantine facilities and disease surveillance measures.
By Monday evening, health officials had not publicly released the laboratory results, leaving questions over whether the incident was a genuine Ebola threat or a false alarm.
Authorities are expected to issue further guidance once the test results are available.
