Tunisia has fired Coach Sabri Lamouchi following a defeat of 5-1 to Sweden in their 2026 FIFA World Cup in the first match and appointed French Coach Herve Renard.
Tunisia’s opening match against Sweden showed defensive frailties and tactical. They were overwhelmed by Sweden’s pace and precision, conceding five goals in performance that left fans frustrated and questioning Lamouchi’s strategies.
The 54-year-old has been the coach since January up to June 2026, as he hoped to guide the team to a stronger position. Tunisia Football Federation has thanked Lamouchi for his service but stressed on the need for urgent corrective measures to keep Tunisia’s World Cup hopes alive.
Renard, with experience, has managed to win the Africa Cup of Nations with Zambia and the Ivory Coast, coaching Morocco in 2018 at the World Cup and Saudi Arabia in 2022.
It is not the first time Tunisia has made a mid- tournament coaching at World Cup, in 1998, Henry Kasperczak was fired after losing to England and Colombia, before closing its match against Romania.
Tunisia is not the only country to fire a coach during World Cup tournament; as Spain fired Julen Lopetegui in 2018 two days before its first match against Portugal.
