The United States President, Donald Trump, has announced his intention to nominate Gianni Infantino to become the next United Nations (UN) Secretary- General.
According to Trump, he thinks Infantino could possibly be the next head of the general body, as the candidates currently in the race are “lame.” He is also respected worldwide by people.
“Infantino is respected by everyone around the world and recognizes he has a special ability to bring people together,” Trump said.
The current Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, will complete his second term at the end of 2026. The UN Secretary-General role is traditionally filled by seasoned diplomats or political leaders with deep international relations experience.
Candidates who have shown interest in succeeding Guterres include, Michelle Jeria, former President of Chile, Rafael Grossi, Director General of the IAEA, Rebecca Mayufis, the Secretary-General of the UN Conference on Trade and Development and former President of Senegal Macky Sall.
Speculation about the nominations comes months after Trump won the FIFA Peace Prize in a star-studded ceremony in December 2025, which was handed to him by the FIFA President, Infantino.
