THIKA, Kenya — A Grade 10 student at Thika High School has died following an alleged confrontation with a fellow student, an incident that has left family members, students and the wider community in mourning while prompting investigations by authorities.
According to reports by the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC), the student was allegedly involved in an altercation before later succumbing under circumstances that remain under investigation.
Police have since launched investigations to establish the exact sequence of events and determine the cause of death.
The incident has attracted widespread attention, with parents and education stakeholders calling for accountability and a transparent inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the student’s death.
Family members have urged authorities to conduct thorough investigations and establish the truth.
“We want a thorough investigation so that the truth about what happened to our child can be established,” a family representative told journalists following the incident.
Investigators are expected to record witness statements, review available evidence and rely on post-mortem findings before releasing a comprehensive report.
The tragedy has renewed concerns over student safety in schools and the need to strengthen counselling, mentorship and conflict-resolution programmes within learning institutions.
Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba has previously condemned violence in schools, warning that such incidents disrupt learning, endanger lives and undermine investments made by parents, communities and the government in education.
“No grievance can justify violence or destruction of property,” the Cabinet Secretary has previously stated.
