Once catapulted from an unknown politician to the country’s second-highest office, Rigathi Gachagua’s rapid ascent to Deputy President was as unexpected as his swift and dramatic political downfall.
Today, Gachagua finds himself navigating turbulent political waters—isolated, embittered, and increasingly regarded as the architect of his own collapse.
Before joining William Ruto’s 2022 presidential campaign, Gachagua had only served a single term as Mathira MP—a tenure marked by an underwhelming parliamentary presence and no notable legislative legacy.
His political journey began in the shadow of his late brother, Nderitu Gachagua, a respected figure who once served as Mathira MP and Nyeri Governor.
It was largely this legacy—and public sympathy—that handed Rigathi his parliamentary seat.
But the mild-mannered former civil servant underwent a radical transformation during the Kenya Kwanza campaign. Once reserved and unremarkable, Gachagua rebranded himself into a combative, unapologetically abrasive political operative.
His aggressive rhetoric, particularly against then-President Uhuru Kenyatta and the so-called “deep state,” earned him admiration from voters frustrated by the outgoing regime.
An Uneasy Elevation
Gachagua’s nomination as Ruto’s running mate was not a foregone conclusion.
In an internal vote within the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), he was trounced by Tharaka Nithi Senator Kithure Kindiki.
However, Ruto ultimately chose Gachagua—reportedly out of political pragmatism given his ethnic base in Mt Kenya—overruling his party’s preference.
Though the move paid off electorally, it planted seeds of discord.
From the outset, many Mt Kenya leaders viewed Gachagua’s elevation with suspicion.
Still smarting from his primary loss, the Deputy President turned inward, interpreting dissent as betrayal.
What followed was a campaign of coercion and intimidation aimed at securing regional dominance. But instead of consolidating support, he alienated key allies.
A Leadership Miscalculated
Gachagua’s efforts to crown himself Mt Kenya’s political kingpin backfired spectacularly.
Instead of cultivating unity and vision, he deployed threats and vitriol, exacerbating divisions.
His confrontational tactics—lacking strategy or humility—undermined his credibility and fueled a narrative of egotism and insecurity.
His attempt to erase the Kenyatta family’s enduring influence in the region only deepened his troubles.
While he unleashed scathing attacks on Uhuru Kenyatta during the campaigns, his tone shifted after the 2022 polls, attempting an awkward reconciliation.
But for many, especially within the Kenyatta circle, his incendiary remarks remain unforgiven.
Impeachment and Aftermath
Gachagua’s political career hit a new low with his impeachment—an unprecedented fall for a sitting Deputy President.
The move not only stripped him of power but also shattered his ambitions to command Mt Kenya politics.
The very base he had hoped to rally behind him offered only muted sympathy. His loss was compounded by the realization that many in government—and his own party—had grown weary of his divisive approach.
Now in the political cold, Gachagua has sought refuge in opposition ranks. Yet his transition has been anything but smooth. His attempts to dominate the opposition narrative have rubbed veteran leaders the wrong way.
His erratic messaging—often contradicting his own past positions—has only raised questions about his credibility.
For instance, as DP, he ardently defended government programs like the affordable housing project and trumpeted economic recovery.
But in opposition, he has reversed these positions without explanation, prompting accusations of hypocrisy and opportunism.
Bitterness as a Brand
Gachagua’s recent rhetoric reveals a man seemingly consumed by bitterness. He frequently targets President Ruto with blistering criticism, but his tone often lacks strategic depth or consistency. Political analysts warn that unless he adopts a more measured and visionary approach, Gachagua risks further alienation.
His credibility, they argue, is not just tainted by his impeachment but by his own conduct—his political vendettas, verbal excesses, and shifting positions.
A Difficult Road Ahead
For Rigathi Gachagua, the path to political redemption remains steep. Winning back public trust will require more than fiery speeches—it demands introspection, reinvention, and genuine bridge-building.
But perhaps the greatest obstacle in his way is not his rivals or his impeachment, but his own inability to evolve.
Until he sheds his combative instincts and embraces the attributes of a statesman—humility, consistency, and strategic foresight—Gachagua’s political future may remain a cautionary tale of ambition undone by bitterness.
