Police in Nakuru have recovered bhang worth an estimated Sh7.2 million after an SUV carrying the drugs was involved in a road accident along the Nakuru-Nairobi Highway.
The incident happened between Shinners Boys and the Mbaruk area after a Mazda CX-5, registration number KDW 640U, crashed while travelling towards Nairobi.
According to preliminary investigations, the driver was attempting to overtake when he lost control of the vehicle and collided with an oncoming Scania trailer.
The damage caused to the Mazda was quite extensive, especially at the front end, with the driver deserting the car and fleeing the scene.
As the police processed the accident scene, they found six sacks filled with bhang in the SUV.
The drugs weighed 241.5 kilogrammes and their value in the street market was estimated to be Sh7,245,000.
The drugs were then seized as exhibits, as the matter was taken up by detectives from the National Anti-Narcotics Investigations Bureau (NANIB), Nakuru.
The police are also carrying out a search for the driver who is still at large.
According to the Director of Criminal Investigations, the investigation is ongoing with efforts to find out more about the consignment and those involved in its transportation.
The police have called on the members of the public who may have any information regarding the above matters to contact the relevant authorities.
