Suba North MP Millie Odhiambo has issued a strong warning to women participating in public protests, urging them to remain vigilant amid rising concerns over criminal gangs infiltrating demonstrations.
The outspoken legislator noted that some of these groups may be politically sponsored — whether aligned to government or opposition — while others are opportunistic criminals taking advantage of chaotic environments to steal or cause harm.
“Some are in it for political gains, others are just criminals looking for a quick opportunity,” she said in a Facebook post.
Odhiambo described how gangs use coordinated tactics, such as sudden crowd movements or staged disruptions, to steal phones and other valuables.
“We often witness gangs blatantly robbing people at rallies through ‘waves’. If you see a sudden surge or disruption in the crowd, be aware — it often ends with many people losing their phones,” she warned.
More worryingly, Odhiambo said these gangs have become bolder over time and are now engaging in sexual violence against women during such events.
“We are calling on the police to take firm action against all criminal elements, regardless of who they are affiliated with. This includes those who recently attacked Kenya Human Rights Commission staff, including female staffers,” she added.
She urged women to take personal precautions during protests and public gatherings, while calling for accountability and justice from security agencies.
