The Kenya African National Union (KANU) is set to join political discussions around Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna’s emerging coalition ahead of the 2027 General Election.
KANU spokesperson Tony Gachoka said he will lead the party to Sifuna’s upcoming party launch as efforts to build a wider opposition coalition gather pace.
“I want to announce here that I will be leading the KANU party to Sifuna’s upcoming party launch,” Gachoka said during a local radio interview on Friday.
Gachoka said KANU wants to associate with the emerging formation, which could also bring together other parties, including the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP).
“We would want to associate ourselves as a coalition within a new coalition, which might include DCP,” he said.
However, Gachoka cautioned against claims that DCP has already agreed to support Sifuna’s presidential bid.
He noted that DCP still has former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua as its presidential candidate and said the party has not formally taken a position in favour of Sifuna.
“DCP currently has a presidential candidate, Rigathi Gachagua,” Gachoka said, adding that the party was yet to make a decision on supporting Sifuna.
Gachoka has in recent days openly backed Sifuna’s presidential ambitions and called on opposition leaders to rally behind the Nairobi senator.
His latest remarks come as Sifuna and his allies prepare to launch the United Democratic Party (UDP) as his political vehicle ahead of the 2027 election.
The move has also opened fresh discussions on how Sifuna’s Linda Mwananchi movement could work with other opposition parties and leaders.
Former Deputy President Gachagua has previously said he would be willing to support Sifuna if opposition leaders agree on a joint presidential candidate, although DCP has not formally endorsed the senator.
With Sifuna’s party launch approaching, attention is now turning to which parties will formally join his coalition and whether the emerging alliance can accommodate leaders pursuing separate presidential ambitions.
