Senate Proposes Tougher Measures to Regulate Tobacco Sales and Protect Minors

Senate is proposing more punitive measures against individuals selling tobacco products to the underage in the country.

Contributing to the debate on Tobacco Control Amendment Bill 2024, senators are also pushed for a complete ban on flavors and additives contained in tobacco products.

Debate on proposed amendments to the Tobacco Control Amendment Bill 2024 currently under second reading at the senate, Thursday attracted high support.

Senators saying the review could not have come at a better as the existing regulations date back to 2007.

During the debate on the bill which seeks to regulate e-cigarettes in terms of sell, lawmakers want the penalties for offenders tightened. Concerns were also rife around the emerging utilization of the products, as some lure the under age with additives and flavors.

The tobacco sector in the country may soon face tougher regulations meant to protect children if the bill which will also be considered at the National Assembly sails through.
