Nairobi County’s frequent floods have been linked to the funding gap experienced in the county by the administration of Governor Johnson Sakaja. The governor has insisted that the capital city needs at least KSh60 billion annually to address the problems facing the city.
Sakaja broke his silence on the evening of Sunday, March 8, just two days after the Nairobi city was hit by flash floods resulting from the rains that fell in the city. The floods have seen many parts of the city become flooded, including the roads, leaving many cars stranded.
According to Sakaja, the Nairobi drainage and infrastructure problems are attributed to the fact that the city is not receiving enough funds to address the problems facing the city adequately.
“I’m not overwhelmed; I’m under-resourced. Nairobi requires at least KSh60 billion annually to address the challenges and development needs in a better way.”
The Nairobi revenue has been increasing over the years from approximately KSh8 billion to about KSh13.8 billion, but the city still faces huge demand for infrastructure and other development needs.
