The government has intensified infrastructure development in Kitui County with the ongoing upgrade of the Kamuwongo–Kandwia Road to bitumen standards, a project expected to transform transport, trade and regional connectivity across Eastern Kenya.

According to Principal Secretary for Internal Security and National Administration Raymond Omollo, the 13-kilometre road project, launched by President William Ruto in November 2025, forms part of the larger B64 corridor aimed at closing a critical infrastructure gap along the Mwingi–Kamuwongo–Ciangera route.

Omollo noted that earthworks and grading are already underway, with several sections having reached subgrade level in preparation for base and asphalt laying.

Once complete, the road will create a continuous paved connection from the Thika–Garissa Highway to the Ena–Chiakariga–Meru corridor, linking Kitui, Embu, Tharaka Nithi and Meru counties while opening up Mwingi North to expanded trade opportunities and easier access to northern markets.

The project is also expected to ease movement of goods and people, improve access to essential services and stimulate economic activities in the region, particularly for farmers, traders and transport operators who have for years struggled with poor road infrastructure.

At the same time, construction works are progressing on the Kyuso–Tseikuru Road under the B52 corridor, further strengthening regional connectivity in an area that has historically faced infrastructure challenges despite producing prominent national leaders.

Omollo said the State Department for Internal Security and National Administration is supporting implementation of the project through enhanced road safety measures, coordinated traffic management, public awareness campaigns and enforcement initiatives aimed at ensuring smooth construction and safer transport along the corridor.
