President William Ruto has announced that the Shauri Moyo Affordable Housing Estate in Nairobi will be renamed Johana Ng’eno Estate in honour of the late Emurua Dikirr MP, Johanna Ng’eno.
Speaking during the funeral service in Emurua Dikirr on March 6, the president said the move was meant to recognise Ng’eno’s role in the development of one of the city’s major affordable housing projects.
He noted that the late legislator served as chairman of the committee overseeing the project.
“Because Johana Ng’eno was on the committee for one of the largest estates in Nairobi, which accommodates 4,500 residents and is called Shauri Moyo, they recommended it be named after Johana Ng’eno. I am directing the Ministry of Housing to rename it Johana Ng’eno,” Ruto said.
The estate, which is designed to accommodate about 4,500 residents, will officially adopt the new name following the president’s directive to the Ministry of Housing.
Ruto also described the late MP as a strong supporter of the government’s Affordable Housing programme, saying he encouraged him to continue pushing the agenda despite criticism.
“Some people told me to stop talking about housing and the housing levy, but today housing is transforming Kenya,” he said.
During the event, the president further pledged KSh20 million to Patrick Ole Ntutu, the Governor of Narok County, to help purchase land for the establishment of a university in Emurua Dikirr.
He added that the national government would also allocate KSh750 million for the construction of the university and student hostels.
