President William Ruto has contributed Ksh500,000 to the family of the late volleyball legend Janet Wanja. The donation was made during a requiem service held on Thursday at the Moi International Sports Centre Kasarani Indoor Arena.
Ruto praised Wanja for her exceptional skills and entertaining presence on the volleyball court. “Janet Wanja was a gifted and entertaining volleyball star.
She was undoubtedly one of the finest sportswomen who broke barriers and set records,” Ruto stated.
He further described her as a humble yet formidable athlete with unmatched mental strength and discipline.
“Wanja was focused, selfless, and always team-oriented. Kenya is fortunate to have had such a remarkable lady who served with honor, passion, and dedication,” Ruto added.
In addition to Ruto’s contribution, the Ministry of Sports also donated Ksh500,000 to support the expenses of Wanja’s funeral arrangements.
Janet Wanja, renowned as one of Kenya’s greatest setters, passed away on December 27, 2024, after a long battle with gallbladder cancer.
Her volleyball journey began at the National Schools Championships with Mukumu before she embarked on an impressive club career with KCB and later Kenya Pipeline.
In 2024, Wanja transitioned to a coaching role as the Malkia Strikers’ Team Trainer, leading the team to the Paris Olympics and the World Challenger Cup in the Philippines.
