President William Ruto has declared seven days of national mourning following the death of former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga, one of Kenya’s most influential and respected political figures.

In a statement issued from State House, Nairobi, President Ruto announced that all national flags and those of the East African Community will be flown at half-mast across the country and in all Kenyan missions abroad as a mark of respect.

“In honor of the life and legacy of the Right Honourable Raila Amolo Odinga, I have declared seven days of national mourning. During this period, our flags shall be hoisted at half-mast beginning midnight tonight until the day of his interment,” said President Ruto.

The President described Raila as “a towering statesman, a freedom fighter, and a patriot whose sacrifices shaped Kenya’s democratic journey.”

He noted that Raila’s passing was not just a loss to his family and political allies, but to the entire nation and continent.

“Raila Odinga was a man of courage and conviction who gave his all in the service of Kenya. He stood firm for democracy, justice, and unity. His voice, his vision, and his values will forever guide our republic,” President Ruto said.

The Head of State also announced that a National Funeral Committee has been constituted to coordinate the mourning period and burial arrangements in consultation with the Odinga family.
