The government has expressed confidence that the construction of the Raila Odinga International Stadium will be substantially completed by the end of July, marking a key milestone in Kenya’s preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Cabinet Secretary for Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports, Salim Mvurya, made the announcement after inspecting ongoing works at the facility.

Mvurya said he was satisfied with the pace of construction, noting that major activities at the stadium are progressing according to schedule.

“I conducted an inspection of the Raila Odinga International Stadium and I am satisfied with the pace of works at the facility, with all major construction activities expected to be substantially completed by the end of July this year,” he said.

The stadium is among the key sports infrastructure projects being developed as Kenya, alongside regional partners, prepares to host the 2027 AFCON tournament.

According to the Cabinet Secretary, attention has now shifted to ensuring the facility meets the standards required by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

He noted that continuous monitoring, turf management and landscaping activities are ongoing at both the main playing pitch and the football training grounds to ensure compliance with CAF requirements.

“Continuous monitoring, turf management, and landscaping works are ongoing at the main playing pitch and the football training grounds to ensure full compliance with CAF standards and requirements ahead of AFCON 2027,” Mvurya stated.

The government has identified sports infrastructure development as a critical component of Kenya’s readiness to host the continental tournament, with several stadiums across the country undergoing renovation and modernization.

Completion of the Raila Odinga International Stadium is expected to boost Kenya’s capacity to host major international sporting events while providing athletes and local communities with a world-class sporting facility.
