Presidential Candidate Reuben Kigame Decry Intimidation by KRA Over Sh20 Million Tax Demand

Presidential aspirant Reuben Kigame has accused the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) of attempting to intimidate him through a sudden tax demand of Sh20 million, which he says is unjustified and politically suspicious.

In a statement shared on social media, Kigame questioned the timing of the notice, suggesting it may be linked to his recent court petition challenging the 2022 General Election outcome.

“Coincidence or fighting back my petition?” Kigame posed, adding that he received an email from a KRA official — whom he referred to only as Ms. D.W. — alleging he owes the government Sh20 million in unpaid taxes.

Kigame, a renowned gospel artist and vocal public commentator, said the claim was baseless, noting that he earns less than Sh200,000 in a good month and is legally entitled to tax exemption as a person with disability (PWD), though he still voluntarily pays taxes.

"I am a self-employed citizen owed millions from music royalties by this same government," he said. "More later. I will not be intimidated."

The development comes as Kigame remains active in national discourse, especially around electoral justice and the rights of marginalized groups. He has previously criticized state institutions for what he terms systemic exclusion and lack of accountability. KRA is yet to respond publicly to Kigame’s claims.
