President William Ruto has announced that the long-awaited construction of the new Nithi Bridge will begin soon, with procurement set to commence on Tuesday, August 5.

Speaking during a public address, President Ruto assured residents of Tharaka Nithi that the government is committed to completing the new Ksh7 billion bridge before the 2027 General Elections.

“People from Tharaka Nithi have always urged me to construct the bridge or they will have problems with me, but I want to assure them that I must construct the bridge, whatever comes may,” the President stated.

The Head of State confirmed that the new bridge design is complete and features major improvements. “We are starting the procurement process of the Nithi Bridge tomorrow.

The new designs of the bridge are ready, and I have already checked them. The new design is good because instead of it being curved, we will make it straight,” he said.

Located along the Embu-Meru Highway, the Nithi Bridge is infamously known as a black spot due to its steep descent, sharp turns, and poor safety features, which have led to numerous fatal accidents over the years.

Ruto emphasized that the construction is crucial to safeguarding lives and addressing long-standing safety concerns. “I have already given instructions that the bridge must be completed before the elections because I do not want the bridge to continue causing losses to Kenyans. It’s a very expensive bridge, but we must do it to save lives,” he added.

The president’s announcement comes shortly after Transport Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir revealed plans to revive more than 580 stalled road projects countrywide.

The new Nithi Bridge is expected to offer a safer and more efficient transport route for road users, ultimately transforming connectivity in the region.
