President William Ruto has earned a notable position in The Independent’s inaugural ‘Climate 100 List,’ ranking 71st, three spots ahead of U.S. President Joe Biden.
This prestigious recognition highlights Ruto’s ongoing efforts to enhance Kenya’s renewable energy sector, with a strong focus on geothermal, wind, and solar power.
According to The Independent, Ruto has made significant strides since his tenure as deputy president, placing emphasis on reforestation and the preservation of natural resources.
Last November, he introduced an annual tree-planting holiday as part of his ambitious goal to plant 15 billion trees over the next decade.
Additionally, he has committed to phasing out fossil fuels in Kenya’s electricity production by 2030, while promoting sustainable farming practices and effective water management.
Ruto’s leadership was also showcased during the recent Africa Climate Summit held in Nairobi, which has been hailed as a significant achievement for his administration.
The ‘Climate 100 List’ features a diverse group of individuals, including environmental activists, scientists, philanthropists, and business leaders, all recognized for their innovative contributions to addressing climate challenges.
Other notable Kenyans included in the list are Mithika Mwenda, Wanjira Maathai, Charlot Magayi, and Wawa Gatheru.
The Independent explained that the list is not a ranking of individuals by importance but rather a celebration of those committed to positive climate solutions.
