Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s body was taken to Parliament Buildings on the morning of Friday, October 17, where it lay in state.

President William Ruto has explained why Raila, with whom he was working in the broad-based government at the time of his death, was accorded such an honour.

The president explained that Raila, for fifteen years, served the people of Kibera Constituency with unwavering dedication and distinction as their Member of Parliament.

"During this time, he was a tireless champion of justice, democracy, and progress — playing a pivotal role in shaping some of the most consequential laws in our Republic’s history, most notably the passage of the 2010 Constitution during his tenure as Kenya’s Prime Minister," said President Ruto.

Consequently, Ruto said it was most fitting for the ODM leader to lie in state for the three arms of Government – Executive, Parliament and the Judiciary – and the nation to honour, with reverence and gratitude, the life and legacy of a true patriot and statesman.
