Police have seized 3,600 litres of illicit alcohol during a targeted security operation conducted in Nairobi’s Soweto informal settlement as part of an ongoing crackdown on illegal brews and narcotic drugs.

According to the National Police Service (NPS), the operation was aimed at dismantling criminal networks involved in the manufacture, distribution and sale of illicit alcohol and drugs within the area.

“Officers based at Kahawa West Police Station in the Nairobi North Sub-region, yesterday 14 July 2026, conducted a targeted crackdown on illicit alcohol and narcotic drugs within the Soweto informal settlement and successfully dismantled an active distillation setup,”the statement read.

Authorities said the recovered consignment was confiscated and investigations launched to identify and apprehend those behind the illegal trade.

The operation forms part of a wider government campaign to combat the proliferation of illicit brews and narcotics, which authorities say continue to pose serious public health and security risks, particularly among young people.

Police reiterated their commitment to intensifying operations against individuals involved in the illegal alcohol business and urged members of the public to continue sharing information that could help in the fight against crime.

The National Police Service has in recent months stepped up enforcement operations across the country targeting illicit alcohol manufacturers, distributors and drug traffickers as part of efforts to enhance public safety and protect communities.
