The authorities have arrested various individuals who were allegedly involved in various attacks on business premises associated with former government personalities Raphael Tuju and Irungu Nyakera.
This was revealed by DCI boss Amin Mohammed during a security briefing with various police chiefs from across the country at the National Police Leadership Academy. He stated that some of the suspects had already been arraigned in court while others are still being pursued by law enforcement officers.
“Goons are criminals, and there is no space for criminals in Kenya. We are aware of what is happening in Karen and Kisumu. Some of these suspects are being arrested and arraigned in court, while some are still being identified,” he said.
This was also confirmed by Inspector General Douglas Kanja, who stated that Kenya cannot afford to be characterized by such acts, especially with the 2027 General Election looming.
On Wednesday night, a caravan of people including auctioneers, security personnel, and hired goons raided Tuju’s property in Karen, Nairobi, in an attempt to evict him due to the long-standing debt resulting from an auction.
Tuju confronted the group during the tense stand-off. He expressed shock at their arrival and claimed that they stated they were representatives of new property owners.
The dispute was caused by the High Court’s ruling that allowed the sale of the property due to the debt of more than KSh1.9 billion. However, Tuju stated that he would not be leaving the property.
Earlier that day in Kisumu, a group of suspected goons raided Nyakera’s hotel. The goons caused destruction of property and injured the security personnel and workers.
Nyakera opened fire in an attempt to scare the attackers away. Later on, the attackers were revealed to have been hired by the politician’s opponents.
In recent times, the security agencies have become uneasy about the use of hired goons in settling political and commercial conflicts.
The law enforcement agencies have warned politicians and other individuals against using criminal gangs. They stated that the law will be fully applied to those responsible.
