As the festive season gains momentum, the National Police Service has declared a nationwide operation against rogue motorists, warning that reckless driving will not be tolerated.
Police Spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga said on Thursday, December 11, that the police would mount operations on major highways, with officers focusing more on overspeeding, drunk driving, dangerous overtaking, and violations by PSV vehicles.
“Those found flouting the rules will face strict lawful action. We are committed to ensuring that through concerted efforts, we keep the roads safe for all Kenyans during this busy season,” Nyaga said.
The Police have installed compliance checks in strategic places to ensure that officers conduct comprehensive checks on the roadworthiness of vehicles. Nyaga also reminded the drivers to maintain their cars, as well as ensure all passengers put on seat belts.
PSVs, he emphasized, should stick to the gazetted carrying capacities and all other regulations. “We call for drivers to adhere to speed limits at all times, ensure their vehicles are in good condition, and that at all times, the safety of the passenger is paramount, ” he added.
Besides traffic enforcement, the NPS has implemented an elaborate security arrangement to ensure safety for the public during this holiday season. Nyaga added that all police formations will collaborate with other government agencies in ensuring increased security throughout the country.
There are also plans to increase patrols in towns and cities, shopping centers, areas of recreation, places of worship, and transport termini. Special units and undercover officers will be deployed on the ground to deter criminal activities and respond to emergencies efficiently.
Nyaga said the festive season has unique challenges since there is increased movement of people, vehicles, and goods. “We want everyone to enjoy their holidays safely. That means following traffic laws, being vigilant, and reporting suspicious activities,” he added.
These are the police’s short- and long-term measures aimed at minimizing accidents and crimes, in order to ensure Kenyans celebrate the festive season in a safe and secure environment.
