Deejay Pierra Makena has reignited a conversation by calling for the establishment of dedicated DJ Awards in Kenya stating they need to be recognized for their work they do in the music industry.
“Deejays need to be recognized. They deserve recognition,” Makena said.
She recalled how she changed her career from being a corporate employee to DJing and since then she has never regrated about it. She also said she has always loved entertaining people and that there many other DJs who do the same thing.
“I’m always entertaining people and I love it. And there are many other DJs out there who do the same thing. They love it and they’re earning a living and they’re happy and you are happy because of them,” She added.
Makena called out on the efforts that DJs put into their work and stated they need awards to be recognized for their contributions to entertaining people and they need flowers.
Beyond mixing tracks, DJs act as tastemakers, bridging local and international music giving the fans live and current music to enjoy.
Makena’s suggestion of establishing such awards would not only elevate the profession but inspire younger talents to pursue DJing as a respected career path.
