Opposition leaders are set to meet today and issue a joint statement in response to the shooting of a protester by a police officer during demonstrations in Nairobi’s Central Business District on Tuesday, June 17.
The protest, organised by civil rights activists, was aimed at demanding the resignation of senior police officials over the recent death of Albert Ojwang while in police custody — a case that has sparked national outrage and intensified scrutiny of law enforcement conduct.
Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka confirmed that opposition figures would convene to chart a collective response to the incident, which has further inflamed tensions between protesters and the police.
“We are deeply concerned by the use of live ammunition on unarmed civilians exercising their democratic rights,” said Kalonzo. “Our meeting will provide direction on the next steps.”
The protest turned chaotic after a rival group clashed with demonstrators, prompting a heavy police presence. During the confrontation, one protester was shot, triggering panic and condemnation from human rights groups.
Opposition leaders are expected to use today’s press briefing to call for accountability, institutional reforms within the police service, and justice for victims of alleged police brutality.
